\nFor the detainees in Woomera, periods of acute anxiety are interspersed with long stretches of boredom. Najaf and his fellow detainees are not allowed to watch television or listen to the radio. Najaf asks for work to relieve the tedium and is given a job in the camp kitchen.
\nConflict sometimes breaks out amongst the refugees within the camp. What causes of conflict does Najaf mention? What is his response to these causes of conflict?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"34518566","body":"The conflicts that break out amongst the camp are mainly traditional rivalries and dislikes ignited once more. This is so because the suffering hours of boredom that the detainees endure can result in flared tempers and irritable behaviour - nerves are sometimes stretched to the limit. The Iranians, Chechens and Afghanis are alert of particular favouritism to any singular culture or nationality, and therefore their suspicious eyes tell them what is not really there. An example in the book relates to occasional extra helpings of food to any body of people; after that, another certain nationality of people complain, and the third must choose who to side with in the little mini wars that rage across the dinner table. Yet the main cause for conflict, Najaf has mentioned, are words of absolutes thrown at others from another country. 'All Hazara are donkeys' is just one of the many words that Najaf hinted at in the book - basically the worst fights may be about certain feelings of patriotism or superiorness to other countries you might consider inferior to your own.
\nNajaf simply reconciles himself with the fact that 80 percent of the asylum seekers are Muslim; therefore they are of one family, a cohesive whole. There should be no wars. No petty rivalries.","dateCreated":"1298111534","smartDate":"Feb 19, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"callumprestidge","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/callumprestidge","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"34569060","body":"The conflicts are mainly just country rivalry. If the Afghans feel that people over on the Iran table are getting more food, they will feel cheated and will begin a fight.
\nNajaf talks about how he takes so much care mesuring an equal amount into each plate to avoid the confrontations. But also, he talks about how these riots should not be breaking out. The song that the Rugmaker sings in the earliest stages of the book displays these cultural differences. In Australia, we are host to such a diverse range of cultures that we often lack unity. But when the Rugmaker was singing, it was clear to the Australians that he was telling a very sad story.

\nAfghan children live very differant to us aswell. They are not being to taught so that they can later on in life go off and get a job and live. Najaf talks about how war-torn his country is and how it is normal for people to have witnessed the horrible deaths of strangers on the street.

\nBut the life of Afghanis, besides the insecurity of it, is also much different to our lifestyle here in Australia.
